Tima Kurdi: The refugee crisis and the need for humanitarian and political action
During our Canada Europe Dialogue on Migration conference Tima Kurdi gave a lecture at the University of Victoria. This video was made after the conference. Tima Kurdi is the aunt of Alan Kurdi – the young Syrian boy who died with his brother and mother while attempting to flee to Greece across the Mediterranean Sea in September of 2015. The photo brought international attention to the effects of the civil war in Syria and the suffering of those having to flee war, hunger and political persecution. In this interview, Tima Kurdi talks about her personal story and how the tragedy has urged her to become an advocate for refugees from around the world. Tima pleads governments and civil societies to provide much needed help to refugees and to find effective responses to their plight
